The Gaia Hypothesis

Lindertje Mans transformeert in een diepzeevis, een ruimtesonde en een menselijke cel in een poging om zich verbonden te voelen met de gehele planeet. Deze drie personages geven hun visie op de mensheid, in meeslepende synthpop songs. Een sensuele muzikale trip met met verleidelijke songs, betoverende kostuums en overwachte transformaties. Een muzikaal, visueel en emotioneel spektakel. Een zoektocht naar een nieuwe relatie van de mens met haar omgeving.

De Gaia-hypothese werd geformuleerd in 1969 door wetenschappers James Lovelock en Lynn Margulis. Ze stelt de aarde voor als een zelfregulerend systeem, waarin alle leven en materie onlosmakelijk verbonden zijn. Als we allemaal onderdeel zijn van hetzelfde systeem, misschien kunnen we andere delen dan vragen hoe het verder moet met ons?

Lindertje: “De Gaia-hypothese geeft mij een nieuw perspectief op mijn plaats op deze planeet. In de jaren ’70 werd de hypothese met scepsis ontvangen, maar ze is sindsdien alleen maar actueler geworden en staat aan de wieg van moderne klimaatwetenschap. Daarnaast is de hypothese voor mij een manier om mijn plaats in deze wereld te onderzoeken, als single vrouw van midden dertig: wat heb ik nodig om me verbonden te voelen? Moet ik mezelf voortplanten om te voelen dat ik echt onderdeel ben van de wereld, of kan ik familie maken met andere wezens?”

In The Gaia Hypothesis zetten Lindertje Mans en Roald van Oosten hun succesvolle samenwerking uit TECH: The Life And Death Of A Sex Robot voort. Scenografie en eindregie zijn in handen van Thomas Schoots. De performance is Engelstalig.

Lindertje Mans studeerde performance aan de Toneelacademie Maastricht en muziektheater aan het Conservatorium in Den Haag. Ze is kernlid en mede-oprichter van Firma MES. 

Roald van Oosten is muzikant en componist. Zijn werk reikt van pop tot duistere soundscapes. Hij begon zijn carrière als frontman van de band Caesar. In 2019 maakte hij bij het National Theatre in Londen de muziek voor het het stuk When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other, in regie van Katie Mitchell, met Cate Blanchett. 

Lindertje Mans transforms into a deep-sea fish, a space shuttle and a human cell in an attempt to feel connected to the whole system. These three characters share their vision on humanity, told through compelling synthpop songs. A sensual musical trip with seductive songs, mesmerizing costumes and unexpected transformations. A musical, visual and emotional spectacle. A search for a new relationship between humankind and its surroundings. 

The Gaia Hypothesis was formulated in 1969 by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis. It imagines the earth as a self-regulating system, in which all life and matter are inextricably connected. If we are all part of the same system, maybe we should ask other parts of this system what to do?

Lindertje: “The Gaia Hypothesis gives me a new perspective on my place on the planet. In the seventies, the hypothesis was received with skepticism, but it has only become more urgent since then, and is now on the basis of modern climate science. Apart from that, it is a personal way for me to explore my position in this world, as a single woman in her thirties: what do I need to feel connected? Do I need to reproduce in order to feel like I am truly a part of this world, or can I make kin with other beings?”

The Gaia Hypothesis is a collaboration between Lindertje Mans and composer Roald van Oosten. Direction and scenography are done by Thomas Schoots. The performance is in English.

Lindertje Mans studied performance at Toneelacademie Maastricht and music theatre at the Royal Conservatory The Hague. She is co-founder of Dutch theatre collective Firma MES. 

Roald van Oosten is a musician and composer. His music ranges from pop gems to ghostly theatrical soundscapes. He started as lead singer of Indie popband Caesar. In 2019 Roald was commissioned by the National Theatre in London to write music for the play: When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other, directed by Katie Mitchell, starring Cate Blanchett.
